Sugaring

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Sugaring?

Sugaring is an ancient form of hair removal. A natural lemon, water and sugar “paste” is heated to body temperature and molded against the growth of hair. It is then removed with the natural direction of hair growth. Unlike waxing, the sugar paste only adheres to the hair. This eliminates any lifting of the skin and decreases the chance of ingrown hairs. Since sugaring is all natural, it is safe for the most sensitive skin types.

How is Sugaring different from Waxing?

There are several differences. First being the ingredient content. Wax is composed of harsh resins that can sit in the landfill for years. Our Sugar Paste consists of water, sugar, and lemon. That’s it. The application and removal are completely reversed. You remove wax in the opposite direction of hair growth. This removes the hair but will more likely than not, cause a lot of irritation and redness. Many clients express feeling very raw or tender in the area they’ve just waxed. Sugaring removes hair with its natural growth. This results in full and clean extractions. Hairs do not break and the skin is not as heavily impacted. Sugaring is known to be significantly less painful compared to waxing. It’s definitely worth a try if you haven’t found a hair removal method that works! Having said this, we do not think that waxing is a bad thing, if that is what you prefer, we just believe that sugaring aligns more with Aveda and our belief of providing eco-friendly services to our clients.

What are the benefits?

  • All natural method of hair removal

  • Safe for sensitive / reactive skin types

  • No burning or skin lifting

  • With consistent sugaring services, hair growth can diminish permanently

  • Safe for clients with varicose veins

  • Skin responds exceptionally well to sugaring. There is little to no reaction

  • Hair grows back slower and sparser in comparison to waxing or shaving

  • Skin is left feeling smooth and exfoliated

How often can I get Sugared?

For consistent results, we recommend sugaring every four to six weeks. This ensures that we’re removing the hair in its earlier stages of growth. The hair will then return significantly slower, and much sparser!

Is Sugaring painful?

There is a level of discomfort similar to waxing. We apply the sugar in the opposite direction of natural hair growth so there could be more “tugging” during the initial service. Of course, this level of discomfort varies from person to person. However, the more frequent you sugar, the less painful the service becomes. This is because there will be fewer, thinner hairs to remove in that area.

Does Sugaring help prevent ingrown hairs?

It most certainly can! Since we’re removing the hair with its natural growth, the follicle does not become irritated. The hair also doesn’t break! So no ingrowns! The best way to prevent ingrown hairs is to exfoliate and moisturize. Exfoliating assists in shedding the top layers of dead skin cells. Hair can get trapped under the skin and start growing abnormally.

You can use an all-natural scrub, loofahs, or an exfoliating cleanser with Beta Hydroxy (Salicylic) or Alpha Hydroxy (Glycolic) Acids. Moisturizing is a must after exfoliating! You want to make sure you hydrate all of those fresh new skin cells!

Is Sugaring safe while pregnant?

100%! Wax contains certain resins so it can easily burn your skin. Waxing also leaves your skin red and inflamed. Our sugar paste is quite literally sugar, water, and lemon so there’s hardly any reaction and your skin is completely smooth vs. raw and tender.

Can I Sugar on my period?

Absolutely. Just use a tampon or menstrual cup! Remember, your skin will be more sensitive during this time.

How long should my hair be before getting sugared?

We know it’s difficult to measure, but anywhere between 1/8 and ¼ of an inch. Not a problem if the hair is longer! You’re just going to see more substantial results when you remove the hair at the lengths specified above.

What if it’s my first time Sugaring?

It’s perfectly fine to get sugared if your hair is grown out! Below are some helpful maintenance tips for your first visit!

How should I prepare before my appointment?

  • Arrive to your appointment freshly showered. Don’t use any lotions or moisturizers in the area being sugared. Avoid makeup if you’re booked for Facial Sugaring.

  • Exfoliate 48 hours before your appointment.

  • Do not sugar if you’ve been over exposed to the sun within the last 48 hours. (This includes tanning beds)

What should I do after my sugaring?

  • Take 48 hours to refrain from activities that’ll cause the body friction or heat.

  • Avoid UV exposure for 24-48 hours (your skin will be sensitized and can burn easily).

  • Cold compress and salt soaks can facilitate in healing.

  • Your pores will be dilated after any hair removal service. So it’s important to keep bacteria from entering the follicles. You’ll receive a few anti-bacterial wipes to use for the next few days after your service.

  • Please note, histamine reactions are rare but can happen during your first sugar or other hair removal service. If this occurs, you may take Benadryl or appropriate non-drowsy antihistamine before or after your appointment.

You should not receive Sugaring if any of the following apply to you:

  • Currently using Accutane or Retin-A

  • Skin rash

  • Sunburn

  • Open sores/wounds

  • Fever

  • Hepatitis
